The names they took for God

Elioun, Most High

Sanchuniathon names Elioun, called Hypsistus — Most High — and his wife Beruth, who dwelt about Byblos, and who gave her name to Berytus. From them, Ouranos and Ge. Gad Yaton: El Elyon in the Hebrew scriptures is this title. Melchizedek of Salem blesses Abram by El Elyon, maker of heaven and earth. The name is older than the book that claims it.

Hermon of the watchers

The Book of Enoch places the descent of the watchers on Hermon, the white peak that looks down on the Bekaa. They take wives, teach arts, bind themselves by oath on that ridge. Every later sky-story that wanted a mountain of knowledge walked this one. The name Hermon is not a Hebrew invention of a blank peak. It is the wall of the land.

The house of cedar

Hiram of Tyre sent cedar, gold, and craftsmen for the temple in Jerusalem. The pillars Jachin and Boaz are Tyrian work. The God they later set against Canaan was housed in Lebanese wood, raised by Tyrian hands.

The Paleo-Hebrew of the Gezer Calendar, the Samaria Ostraca, the Siloam Inscription, is the Phœnician alphabet. They wrote their condemnation in our hand. Jezebel, daughter of Ithobaal, they made a witch. The king-list of Tyre still names her father as king.
