Byblos to the Pillars

The sea road

Not an empire of governors. A web of harbors. The same letters, the same weights, the same gods.

Lords of the sea

The bireme. Navigation by the Pole Star — Phoinike, they called that constellation after us. Herodotus says Phœnician captains circumnavigated Africa for Necho of Egypt. From Arwad to Gadir the sea was one house with many doors.

Not governors. Harbors. The same gods, the same letters, the same weights. Rome later called that web an enemy, and burned its western capital. The road is still there.
